What you see
“Loops of thread sit on top of the fabric.” Symptoms described exactly the way you’d describe them — no jargon required to find your page.
What’s really happening
The part most manuals skip. Understand what the machine is doing inside, so the fix makes sense — and sticks.
What to try, in order
The top three fixes, cheapest and most common first. Most problems resolve at step one or two — in minutes, at your own table.
Most of the machines that land on my bench didn’t need me. They needed an owner who knew what to check first.

Educator & Bench technician · The Sewing Haven
Thirty years at the bench — now in your hands
I grew up in my family’s sewing machine repair shop, trained under techs across the country, trained top dealers for Janome, and spent 20+ years training sewists of all types on machine fluency.
Good dealer support is disappearing from towns everywhere. These books are what I’d tell you if you could pull up a chair next to my bench.

Before you ask
Will these books work for my brand of machine?
Yes. Janome, Bernina, Brother, Baby Lock, Singer, Pfaff, Juki, Kenmore, etc., etc. — the mechanics of a lockstitch machine are the same. Where anything is model-specific (like oiling), the books send you to your manual, which is always the final authority.
How do I get the books?
Every book is a PDF, delivered to your inbox the moment you order. Print it and keep it lay-flat beside your machine, or read it on a tablet where it’s easily searchable.
Are these sewing lessons?
Not exactly — and that’s the point. These are written to cover what sewing lessons miss. Whether you know how to sew and want to go deeper or are brand new, I teach machine fluency. The fundamentals are universal — but also universally skipped. That’s the gap these books fill.
What if a book doesn’t help me?
Reply to your receipt within 30 days and I’ll refund it. No forms, no fuss.
Will the books tell me to open up my machine?
Owner-level work only: cleaning, oiling per your manual, needles, threading, tension. Motor, wiring, and internal timing are technician territory — these books are designed to teach owner fluency. You will know your machine on a deeper level.
Don’t just operate your machine. Understand it.
When you know how it works, everything works better — every stitch, every project, every dream. Start with a handbook to build the understanding, or a field guide for the problem in front of you.
